Your Health is an Investment Not an Expense

How is it already September? To this day, I still dread Labour Day weekend and I am not even a student…so I keep asking myself why?

The start of the school year can be a stressful time for so many different reasons. So, if you are like me, and back to school causes stress whether you are a parent, child, student, teacher, or just an individual who doesn’t want the summer to end, you are not alone.

This year specifically may cause stress as many of us are planning to return to the office. A change in routine and environment can cause stress but there are ways to fix that!

It is so crucial to take care of our mental wellbeing as it is a key component of our overall health. Our mental wellbeing is affected by our life experiences, family history, socioeconomic condition, biological factors and of course genetics. Our mood, cognition, stress resilience and emotional states can all be improved through various personalized lifestyle recommendations based on our genetics.

The biggest thing we hear is that “I don’t have the time” or “I cannot make that investment.” What many individuals do not realize is that “your health is an investment not an expense…although it will become an expense if you don’t take time to invest in it.” I could not agree with this quote more!

Just like on an airplane you have all heard that “you need to secure your own mask before assisting another person.” Well, the same goes with our own health! We must take care of ourselves in order to take care of others. With the start of the school year, for those who have children needing the care and attention they deserve, you cannot forget to take care of your own health and well-being as well!

It goes without saying that exercise is good for you. It is good for both our physical AND our mental well-being! Even if you are going back to the office and taking your kids to and from school, that is not an excuse not to exercise. Exercise promotes strength, endurance, flexibility and can also help to reduce body fat and boost metabolism. There are many types of exercises including endurance activities and power exercises. If you are making excuses, maybe it is a lack of motivation; maybe it is burnout because you are not getting adequate rest; maybe you are not enjoying your current workout routine or maybe it is simply because you are not doing an exercise regimen best suited for your unique genetic makeup! Exercise should be looked upon as a privilege, not a chore, so consider changing up your routine and find what works for you! It is never too late to get started.

Our Love My Health Test looks at various testing categories including physical fitness. In this section, we look at the exercise regimen best suited for your unique genetic makeup as well as how your genes influence your susceptibility to injury, how quickly you can recover after a workout, the impact of exercise on managing Type 2 Diabetes, your pain tolerance, your inherent inclination towards exercise, and your bone health profile.

If you’ve been waiting for that “new year, new month, new week or new day…” Today is now September 1st: a new month, new day, and the start of an upcoming new school year…so there’s no better time to start than today!

Wishing everyone a wonderful and successful start to the school year, return to the office and a Shana Tova to all those who celebrate!
